			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week during a meeting with a prospective Austin business where we were discussing the plans for how to market their business on the internet, I asked how often the analytics from their website were reviewed. Being really busy running their business, it wasn&#8217;t that surprising that they didn&#8217;t know how many visitors they were currently getting on their website nor how to find out how to find out.</p>
<p>So I thought I was making it easier by asking them how many calls they received on a daily or weekly basis from new clients &#8211; business that was new.</p>
<p>Again a blank.</p>
<p>I got their attention when I proposed that we postpone making any changes to their marketing until they could tell me how many clients on average they were already getting from the internet . If we didn&#8217;t know where they were right now, they would never know how far they had come once they deliberately marketed their business on the internet. Without that information they could not have a clear idea of the value of their marketing their business. Its all about return on investment.</p>
<p>So I left them with a challenge &#8211; spend the next month or so tracking  how many calls come in or walk-ins that are new business. Get a number &#8211;  two a week, 5 a day &#8211; whatever it was. And for those people ask them  how they came to find Business X. Sometimes I ask it like this sometime  during the initial conversation.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;So I know if what I&#8217;m doing is effective in terms of  marketing, could you tell me how did you find out about my business?&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>More often then not these days, its the internet.</p>
